Oklahoma drill12/28/2023 And many of us haven’t been doing it for a long time. “ I don’t think lining up two guys that are going to barrel into each other, usually with bad technique, just to try to win a collision. “I do think there’s times where we do have to do physical drills that reveal physical play and have to do it,” Leipold said. They make all these rules of percentages and then you get in a room with head coaches and everybody’s looking around going, ‘Who is going live this much that these rules ?’ Because nobody is doing it. “ all decisions, you go back from the elimination of two-a-days - or no two-a-days two days in a row - to whatever, I personally think we do a lot of things about the amount of live tackling. “I can’t tell you the last time I did one of that nature, ” Leipold said. Sign up for VIP access and get your first month for just $1! out" the Oklahoma drill and similar practice activities with head-on contact. Leipold was asked about the NCAA "sort of phasing. The new Kansas coach, however, is not a big fan of that way of doing things. In it, either two linemen would line up across from each other and try to push their counterpart back or an offensive skill position player would line up with a few yards of separation from a defensive player and try to make it across a makeshift goal line. The Jayhawks previously did their spin on the drill - renamed "the Jayhawk drill" - under Les Miles. One of the more unique questions Leipold was asked came with regard to the Oklahoma drill. Veterans and high profile NFL players rarely participate in pit drills due to the higher risk of injury.Speaking via Zoom at Big 12 Media Days, Lance Leipold addressed a number of topics - his transition to Lawrence, the upcoming quarterback battle and his bond with a star player among them. However, with the firing of head coach Jack Del Rio, and with the hiring of current coach Mike Murlarkey, the drill has been banished by the team. In the case of the Jaguars, fans use to be invited to watch and media members are allowed to submit match-ups subject to the coaches approval. Notable exceptions include the Jaguars, Chargers, and the Bengals who use the drill as a kind of celebration of the first day of full contact practices. In the NFL, some team owners and coaches do not allow the Oklahoma Drill. Other times the drill is used simply to get players in the proper mind-set for full contact practices, especially in high school and college where many times players have gone up to eight months in non-contact only drills. While often criticized as excessive, it can be a critical tool used by coaches to evaluate players that might have looked good in non-contact drills, but have yet to face full contact. Many high school and college teams use the Oklahoma Drill as a way to kick off the first day of full contact practice. If a player is able to drive the other player out of the corridor, that also ends the drill. The two players, at the sound of the whistle, then run at one another and the drill is over when one of the players is on the ground, or if a ball carrier is involved when he is tackled. This creates an area of about three feet by nine feet. A corridor is set up typically using three blocking bags on each side of the players lined up top to bottom to create a wall, and the walls are spaced about one yard apart. The most common involves two players lined up three yards opposite one another. The Oklahoma drill has several variations. Developed by legendary University of Oklahoma coach Bud Wilkinson, the Oklahoma Drill has become a tradition not only at OU, but at football practices across the country from high school to the pros. The Oklahoma drill, also known as the pitt drill is an American football practice technique used to test players in confined full contact situations. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Blue crab cake12/28/2023 These are much more delicate than the fried crab cake recipes I linked above so I don’t recommend frying them. You can always broil them briefly at the end if you want them extra browned or with a slight crunch. The Ritz crackers were so light!Īs I said, restaurant generally broil crabs like this but for at home, I found that baking the crab cakes browns them and ensures that they are cooked through (raw egg) which can be tricky with a home broiler. It’s almost as if the crab cake is being held together by nothing but an egg but it’s at the same time creamy and solid. These crab cakes had a ton of fresh crab flavor but just a hint of something rich and almost buttery but you wouldn’t quite guess it’s Ritz crackers. So when it came time to make some fancy crabcakes for my birthday I thought, why not try it with Ritz? Turns out, it was a great idea. What a meatloaf revelation! I made a meatloaf that way earlier in the month and really was very good–buttery and rich but not overpowering. This spring we watched Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu and Kerry Washington’s character makes the family she’s working for meatloaf using Ritz crackers. This recipe makes those kind of crab cakes. It’s large chunks of straight crab which are not only eye-catching in the crab cake but satisfying to bite into. Lump crab meat is the most delicately flavored, most expensive (there is very little of it in each crab) yet fairly sturdy of the crab meats. They are also more often broiled, not fried. Those crab cakes are always made with lump (even jumbo lump) and very little filler. However, these are not, by and large, the crab cakes that you will encounter at restaurants. That’s very good and how I sort of think of crab cakes in general because growing up, we didn’t really go to restaurants or get take out so we’d make our own for special occasions.Īs an adult, I’ve made non-Old Bay crabcakes which, while tasty, seemed wrong and a version closer to what my mom made but with saltines instead of bread which is another homestyle crab cake technique that a lot of other families I knew over the years did instead. Growing up my mom always fried them and made them with more affordable backfin or a mix of backfin and lump and torn bread ( recipe here). I know I have posted a few crab cake recipes here before. Not as easy as going out to eat but not bad either. My husband made some potato salad, some fancy deviled eggs, and a coca-cola cake so all we had to do was make the crab cakes for dinner. I went to the seafood market and bought soft crabs for lunch, claw, and lump crab meat the day before so I’d be all ready.įor lunch, we had soft crab sandwiches (with Old Bay hot sauce added to the egg!) with yellow tomatoes and lettuce. Since it was my birthday and we couldn’t go anywhere (thanks to life and pandemic conspiring against me once again) I went all out for my meals that day.
